Aside from design adjustments, the most important takeaway from me was learning the importance of over-communicating rather than under-communicating with my team, the digital production managers, and the artist managers. Mid-way through the internship program, I was able to discuss with my mentor about the aspects I could be improving on.
COLUMBIA RECORDS INTERNSHIP 2021 PROFESSIONAL
On a personal level, I found the value of reaching out for help from professors, mentors, friends, and professional counselors. There were many points within the semester where I struggled to juggle projects and deadlines for school and the internship while maintaining my sleep schedule and mental/physical health. Additionally, while I had anticipated the challenge adding this job to my workload would be, I had greatly overestimated how much I could actually handle. The constant time re-organization and schedule re-orientation caused a great deal of stress for me. Over the course of the semester, I relocated to California (where I consider “home,” after the ending of my Taiwan Visa) and then to Ithaca (to attend school more easily). For one, when I had started this internship, I was living in Taiwan with my parents. However, I was able to learn so much from this entire experience. While this internship was an incredible opportunity for me, it did not come without challenges. These were also done in Adobe Illustrator (and partially in Adobe Photoshop for photo rendering). These were sketched by hand then rendered in Adobe Illustrator based off of his album “Medicine.”įinally, I designed promotional graphics for Quinn XCII’s stream with Jimmy Conrad. I also created original Twitch emotes for James Arthur to be used for viewers to react to stream content or send in chats. I chose the color scheme and graphics based off of 44phantom’s most recent release, using his iconic skeleton figure, and rendered them in Adobe Illustrator.

The black boxed below represent the space in which the stream would appear. These were to be used during stream intermissions, introductions, and also during the stream itself. During my internship, I designed twitch overlays for 44phantom. Twitch, a streaming platform used primarily for gaming, is previously uncharted territory for Columbia. Additionally, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this internship was completely virtual. This internship lasted 12 weeks and was part-time (22.5 hours per week), so I was able to still enroll in regular coursework at Cornell. More details about these projects can be found below! Aside from these digital assets, one of the big projects I worked on was re-vamping the Columbia Records YouTube page. As an intern, I created social media graphics, advertisement banners, video trailers, Twitch emotes, and Spotify graphics for Columbia’s roster of artists including ACDC, James Arthur, Quinn CXII, Riley Lanez, and King Princess. The digital productions team is responsible for the creation of digital assets, varying from album release packages to social media content and animated/AR videos. In the Spring 2021 semester, I got the amazing chance to work as a Sony Music intern for the digital productions team under Columbia Records.
